In 1888, St. Joseph's College was founded. Previously, the Italian Capuchin Fathers operated a seminary on the site. Seminary is still referred to as "SEM" while discussing the school. Four Christian Brothers officially assumed leadership of St. Joseph's College in 1892, marking the start of the Christian Brothers' involvement in the administration of the institution.
The school is one of 20 educational institutes in India administered by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, a pontifical foundation, founded in Ireland in 1802 by Edmund Ignatius Rice, a wealthy Catholic layman, who was beatified in 1996.
